- Make it something you value and get clear on why.
- Do you believe you can do it? How confident are you on a 1-10 scale? How could you fine tune the goal or get more tools to make it feel more achievable?
- What could get in your way? Obstacles could be external (work, family obligations, etc) or — more often — internal (allowing ourselves to be distracted by immediate gratification, not valuing it enough to make it a priority, etc).
- How long will it take? Most resolutions are bigger and harder than we realize. We need to cut down our resolution into short term chunks so we can feel more short term accomplishment along the way.
- What will it cost you? We have to get very clear that your goal comes with a price tag. It may be time, money, saying no to short term fun, turning down or renegotiating friend or family requests, going to bed earlier, etc. I encourage you to write down all the costs you can think of and decide if you are willing to pay them. If not, that’s ok. It means you’ll need to cut down your goal until the price is affordable.
- Go all in. Once you have gone through the steps above and have confidence that it is a realistic, manageable, and very valuable goal — than decide to commit. But…don’t commit to the outcome. Commit to the process or system that will get you there. What daily actions do you need to do — no matter what — that will make your goal a natural result?
Take some time to work through the steps above. True, lasting change is hard work, and takes time. Decide if you are ready to take action, or if this is just a knowledge gathering exercise for you. Either way is ok, just be clear that knowledge without action doesn’t produce change. Decide if you’re ready. If you are, we finish this next week!
Cheering for you!
